Trinity College Dublin (TCD)
Trinity College Dublin (IR) TCD, its affiliated St. James’s Hospital (SJH) and Trinity Translational Medicine Institute (TTMI), is one of Europe’s leading universities and member of the League of European Research Universities (LERU). TCD-SJH-TTMI account for the largest number of ongoing clinical trials in Ireland. At TTMI, specializes in the safe development of translational products including advanced nanomaterials or nanomedicine and contribute as working group chair to ETP Nanomedicine. TCD is also European leader in developing Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) activities under the Science Gallery Dublin (TCD), the world first place in public engagement and scientific dissemination. 1) the Laboratory of Biological Characterization of Advanced Materials (LBCAM), located at the Trinity Translational Medicine Institute (TTMI), specializes in the development of Nanomedicine and its translational aspects including the safety applications of advanced nanomaterials and nanomedicine. LBCAM, which has an internationally established history in advancing nanomedicine (https://www.tcd.ie/IMM/lbcam/), will provide state-of-the-art instrumentations, space and personnel. 2) TTMI, located on the grounds of St. James Hospital, is a large-scale centre of knowledge excellence supporting patient-orientated research. The uniqueness of the TTMI facilities is that all principal investigators share their knowledge and expertise within a single institute. The close proximity with St. James’s hospital and Clinical Research facilities also makes of TTMI the suitable space where to take on translational biomedical research and pre-clinical studies with the objective to bring them to the clinics. Thus, TTMI has developed unique expertise in translational research, which spans the entire spectrum from cellular based approaches, in vivo animal models to patient-orientated research. Wellcome HRB Clinical Research facility at St. James’s Hospital – a dedicated clinical research facility located in the heart of Ireland’s largest teaching hospital. Mercer’s Institute for Successful Aging - The Institute has an extensive commitment to research in age related diseases in areas such as memory, genetic, metabolic and endocrine and neuro-imaging and provides clinical services through its memory clinic function.
Role within EXPERT
The LBCAM, located within the Trinity Translational Medicine Institute (TTMI), is fully equipped for carrying out the characterisation required in the project under WP3 - WP11 activity. LBCAM at TCD has developed and established fully validated processes and methodologies for nanotech-based characterisation of critical quality parameters (in medicinal and medical products; biomaterials, organic, inorganic materials). Assessment of functionalization and characterisation based on particle analysis approach, in vitro and in vivo toxicity and safety screening according to the EUNCL project assay cascade. LBCAM has also extensive expertise in product screening by High Throughput Screening (HTS) or High Content Screening (HCS) technology in vitro or in 3D models in line with the latest regulatory requirements.
